LOY Contemporary Art Gallery proud to announce ‘Silence Between Forms’ – a compelling duo show highlighting the distinct practices of Chinese contemporary artist Liu Bin and Japanese Architect-ceramicist Yuki Nara.

At the 12th edition of AsiaNOW, set against the historical architecture of La Monnaie de Paris, this exhibition proposes that silence is not an absence of meaning, but an active, breathing void.

The synergy between Liu's two-dimensional brushstrokes and Nara's three-dimensional ceramics sparks a generative intersection and dialogue. Both artists engage in a profound destabilizatiin of inherited cultural iconographies, subverting traditional, instantly recognizable motifs through a distinctly contemporary lens.

Liu Bin interrogates organic and allegorical subject matter—most notably his surrealist botanical shapes and mythic mushroom motifs—by distorting their natural logic. He strips these familiar ecological fixtures of their pastoral innocence, rendering them instead as uncanny, existential markers of a fragmented psychological landscape. Yuki Nara applies a rigorous architectural sensibility to the 350-year legacy of Ohi ceramics, deconstructing the fundamental morphology of historical tea-ware and functional vessels. Rather than replicating the solid, utilitarian volumes dictated by craft tradition, Nara uses complex CAD modeling to fragment the clay into skeletal, lattice-like structures. Through this parallel subversion, both practices refuse to treat heritage as a static monument; instead, they dismantle historic forms to build an entirely new visual vocabulary for the present day.

This thematic ellipsis finds a physical counterpoint in Nara’s hand-carved porcelain and clay. By piercing the walls of his vessels, Nara externalizes the internal void of the ceramic medium, creating negative spaces that explicitly invite light, air, and shadow to pass through the artwork. Where Liu utilizes the canvas to map the expansive, unsaid spaces of human consciousness, Nara manifests those same spaces structurally.

Together, they demonstrate that meaning is not merely found within the physical art objects themselves, but in the silent, evocative spaces that breathe between them.
